Following the rapturous success of last year’s debut album Dreams, The Whitest Boy Alive return for 2009 with their follow up album Rules. It’s alittle less indie pop than their debut, and perhaps a little more disco–sometimes even betraying a touch of house. The Whitest Boy Alive’s unique sound remains however, with Erlend Oye’s (Kings of Convenience) distinctive vocals and a spare stripped down feel throughout. Rules was recorded in Mexico this summer where the band built a studio in a house by the beach. The lyrics are often of a melancholic vibe, but juxtaposed with the disco feel of the music they equilibrate, making for a compelling listen.

The eagerly awaited album from Mr Oizo aka Quentin Dupieux, featuring the likes of Uffie, Errorsmith & Carmen Castro. Mr Oizo has defined the deep looped up electro sound that Ed Banger is now famous for. A great album which exploits all of those over the top noises we love. The cover art denotes how detached he now is from that Levis ad, but he still uses bass sounds that would make any yellow muppet go crazy. One of the best full lengths Ed Banger have put out.

Now you may recall Swag’s ‘Version 5’ was originally released on the seminal Junior Boys Own label (see Taste The Difference Vol 1: The Very Best Of Swag) but that’s about the closest link with the two compilations of house music; well in the mixed CD version anyway, the official release comes with DJ friendly unmixed disc 2.Original boss of Afro Art, Ashley Beedle in his Black Science Orchestra guise kicks things off with ‘typical’ track apropriatel entitled ‘Start The Dancer’ followed by an extended synthy dubby ‘Save Us (the Jam)’. Whilst on the subject of Faith and Afro Art, the current copy contains an interview with a sung hero at FLY, Paul ‘Jazz Room’ Murphy on the Jazz Dance Story. And he’s coming back for more Shiftless Shuffle Xmas bizness!
Anyway, back to Terry Farley mixing JBO up. As a DJ, remixer, producer, record label boss, house music expert for the best part of 20 years and currently a third of the Faith management team, Mr. Farley knows a good tune to dance to. His Roach Motel mix of ‘B-Boy Black’ is what all-night long house music is all about; get in that groove and stay there. Like, P.L.C.’s ‘Shame’. Originally released on an EP called Jazz-Funk, there’s no more than a merest hint of Azymuth about it.Thinking about the land of Azymuth, ‘A Day In Copacabana’ is all about what a big tune is about and Joey Negro’s mix of ‘There But For The Grace Of God’ is just anthem by Fire Island (aka DJ Pete Heller and Terry Farley). Mr. Beedle turns up again late on as part of X-Pres 2 with the mighty ‘The Sound’. ‘Wild Luv’ is the biggest twist on ‘Wild Thing’ as you’re likely to ever hear and it’s all about cowbells for the ‘Rhythm Graffiti’; what a great title for such a percussive workout, I not sure if there is a co-incidence going on here but it does seem to be the longest tracks are the best. And the last 2 are long uns.Farley is co-credited for compilation and mixing with The Misterons; no idea who they are but this CD set is for those that like theisoulful House deep Latin and funky; just the thing for fans of Gilles Peterson In The House and look out for the A Boy’s Own Odyssey (Vol. 1) and there’s a Junior Boy’s Own 20 year anniversary compilation due out at the end of the year.

This legendary Amorphous Androgynous record, planned for release in 1994 only to disappear, with possible tracks turning up all over the place (A Study Of Six Guitars, ‘Environment’ tracks on ISDN broadcasts, the Teachings From The Electronic Brain short film, the Dead Cities credits and 2007’s archive series), was remastered in 2007 and reconstructed by Brian released as an archive on FSOLDigital. Renamed as a FSOL album (probably to avoid confusion with the Amorphous Androgynous psychedelic band of this era), the album is a halfway point between Lifeforms’ ambience and textures and ISDN’s darker claustrophobia. Mike Litt is one of the longest-working DJs spinning house in Germany. Born in Washington DC he became well known as a DJ and radio presenter at WDR Radio 1 LIVE. He travels around the globe honoring events as “Mayday”, the “Miami Winter Music Conference” or the “Privilege” (Ibiza) and regularly plays at “Tribehouse” (Neuss). He released several mix-compilations at “Ministry of Sound” and “Kontor”. On his course he released several tracks and remixes on various imprints. Finally we come to the point that Mike presents his latest DJ-mix at Circle Music called “Out in The Street” – based on the track from Bruce Springsteen. 2 years of house and techno have left some formative experiences thus Mike points out the fact that a handmade mix without software or further corrections is something lively and honest. There are little bumps and inaccuracies which emphasize the goal of this compilation: Catching the perfect moment while sliding deeply into house, minimal, dub and reduced electro sounds. The compilation shows Mike’s sense for a heterogenic and variable mixture of great dance tracks and producers: Gregor Tresher, Tucillo, Terry Lee Brown Junior, The Timewriter, Alex Flatner feat. Lopazz and many more… CD
Varied and vivid, LUCIANO’s productions and DJ sets reflect his rich, multi-cultural background, with origins in Switzerland and Chile. Luciano’s mixed identity shows in his music, a somewhat mystical blend of deep techno & electro that integrates southern elements in rhythms and colorful patterns in sound. Seduced by music at an early age, Luciano started out by playing various instruments, and eventually began DJing and organising parties in Santiago, Chile. As leading lights in Santiago’s developing scene, Luciano and his best friend ANDY SCHOPF promoted the largely successful Sense Club and Encuentros con la Technocultura, while also collaborating with people outside of the city (including fellow Chileans DANDY JACK, SENOR COCONUT and RICARDO VILLALOBOS), undoubtedly becoming some of the most important instigators in Latin American electronica.
With beginnings as a DJ and promoter, Luciano soon found himself producing, landing his first release on Detroit’s legendary TRANSMAT imprint. He has since released to huge critical acclaim on MENTAL GROOVE, PERLON, KLANG ELECTRONIC, PLAYHOUSE and BRUCHSTUECKE, to name but a few. He has also had remixes with the likes of POKERFLAT, GET PHYSICAL and M_NUS and for artists as varied as SALIF KEITA, TIM WRIGHT and M83. Luciano’s own label, Cadenza, has proved to be a veritable force in the electronic music world, with stunning releases from Ricardo Villalobos, Locodice, Guido Schneider, Rhadoo and Digitaline. CD
After 10 years of forward-thinking musical fusion, Boozoo Bajou return with their most seductive and sophisticated album yet, ‘Grains’. The producers Florian Seyberth and Peter Heider are already widely respected around the globe for their unique blend of modern electronica with blues, jazz, soul, latin and dub elements. But on ‘Grains’, the Nuremberg duo take a lighter and brighter path, absorbing acoustic folk and classic songwriting into their progressive musical journey. Boozoo Bajou earned global attention with their irresistible breakthrough single ‘Night Over Manaus’ in 1998, their 2001 debut album ‘Satta’ and its 2005 sequel ‘Dust My Broom’. They also demonstrated their excellent and wide-ranging musical taste on two excellent mix compilations, ‘Juke Joint’ and ‘Juke Joint II’. In addition, Florian and Peter have remixed and collaborated with a wide range of major artists. These include hip-hop superstar Common, Joe Dukie from New Zealand dub-rock collective Fat Freddy’s Drop, rapper Oh No from the Stones Throw camp, former Motown writer-producer and blaxploitation soundtrack legend Willie Hutch, and the veteran Louisiana singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, author of the all-time classic ‘Rainy Night In Georgia’. Yet ‘Grains’ marks a dazzling new chapter in Boozoo Bajou’s career. This is the duo’s most organic album so far, making beautiful new sounds by blending modern studio electronics with live instruments and guest vocals. An album of underground and experimental sounds, but based on strong melodies and emotionally charged vocals. Inspired by the resurgence in acoustic singer-songwriters, and a visit to the contemporary folk festival Green Man, obsessive record collectors Florian and Peter made ‘Grains’ after falling in love with the Laurel Canyon generation of early 1970s LA. This was a time of unplugged introspection for rock superstars like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne. As on their previous albums, Boozoo Bajou have made something fresh and modern from their old-school inspirations, weaving them into their 21st century studio soundscapes. “We didn’t try to make an authentic West Coast album, it’s just that laidback California thing was in the back of our minds,” Florian explains. “It coloured the whole thing.” Several guests sing on ‘Grains’. But Boozoo Bajou’s most exciting new discovery is their first ever female vocalist, the young British singer-songwriter Rumer, whose voice was described by BBC London as coming “straight out of Laurel Canyon”. Rumer provides the vocals on ‘Same Sun’, an addictive fusion of acoustic melancholy with shiny modern production. She also sings on ‘Messengers’, a sublime mix of jazz, electronics and singer-songwriter folk. Imagine a generation-spanning voice which blends the fragile beauty of Karen Carpenter, the warm glow of Sade and the spooky magic of Goldfrapp. ‘Grains’ is another lovely acid-folk ballad with a broad cinematic sweep. “With this track especially, we had the West Coast feel,” says Florian. “I really get a feeling of oceans when I hear this, a wide Pacific Ocean.” Boozoo Bajou chose the same name for their album title because ‘Grains’ seemed to best describe their wide range of ingredients and inspirations. “There are a lot of different small influences on us and our music, all under one roof,” Florian says. “My main background is punk rock and rockabilly, from when I was a kid. Peter is totally the opposite. He really studied classical music and jazz, and his father is a modern composer. The sound we create is what happens when these two come together.” Fans of previous Boozoo Bajou albums will appreciate the rich mix of contemporary and vintage sounds scattered across the album. On the luminous late-night torch song ‘Flickers’ and the bittersweet soul ballad ‘Sign’, the ghost of Curtis Mayfield meets Florian’s love of early Style Council. Meanwhile, somewhere between the spaghetti western twangs of ‘Kinder Ohne Strom’ and the trippy sunshine ripples of ‘Fuersattel’, Ennio Morricone shares a Studio One jam with King Tubby. Then there is closing track ‘Big Nicks’, a gentle Blue Note jazzy stroll through uptown Manhattan, where the 24-hour diner of the title is located. Both inside and out, ‘Grains’ is an intoxicating mix of past, present and future. A folk songbook for the 21st century. A soulful statement for today. Boozoo Bajou have made their finest album to date.
